Personal statement 2

Fashion has always had an important place in my life. Since my early childhood when I
travelled with my parents (who have been in the shoe design business over 20 years already)
from one shoe fair to another,I knew that this was something I wanted to do in my future. My
multicultural background has helped me to understand different cultures and stories behind
them, which has influenced me and my choices in the life a lot. Because of my Russian
temperament, I am really passionate about important things like fashion, in my life and when I
have a goal, I'll do anything to achieve it and concentrate on it 100%.
From 2006-2010 I worked in multiple places in the design industry. I started off from my
parents business and visited multiple shoe fairs in Italy, which showed me how the fashion
business works. At the same time I was offered a chance to start working for the national
student newspaper as a fashion editor.I spent summer 2009 working in the Tiina Talumees
couture house (she is the most successful independent Estonian fashion designer).I helped her
to develop her new collection and saw various stages of the design process.I spent this summer
working in Marie Claire Estonia as a fashion editor assistant.I had a chance to work at the
photo shoots and do general styling.
Out of all these things, I've had the most amazing experience at Alexander McQueen where I
helped to put together PRE AW 2011 collection. I started as a design intern, but during my
stay there, I had a chance to design and develop prints, do lots of research, and design knit
part of the collection.
The Alexander McQueen internship and foundation in Central St Martins have taught me so much
about myself, my artwork and designs in a very short time. This year has given me confidence
that fashion is really something that I want to do for my whole life. The structure, shape,
quality, material, little details that change the overall feel of the garment are things that
I'd like my designs to have.Simple, yet complex.
I've been interested in photography for years and I've tried to develop my photographic skills
in darkroom and digital photography over that time. I really do love in-depth research and I
think that photography has helped me a lot.Different workshops and extensive research
(including screen printing-8 weeks, art textiles-6 weeks, 2 x 6 weeks life drawing etc) have
taught me how to connect fashion and photography visually in more interesting ways.
Robert Rauschenberg,Christian Boltanski and Egon Schiele are the artists who have influenced
my work the most.I admire how Rauschenberg has used screen printing and 3D objects in his
"combines" and I am amazed by how much Boltanski's artwork can challenge and question our
minds in relation to our perception of life and death.Egon Shiele drawings are so simple, yet
have so much depth.
I have been the winner at multiple fashion and design competitions, including (Quelle) Estonia's Best
Young Fashion Designer 2007.Winning the Quelle's (the International shopping
catalogue's)design competition in 2007 has been one of the highlights of my life. The entire
range (7 garments) of my designs were produced in large numbers and sold online as a special
edition part of the Spring/Summer 2008 collection.I've recorded every stage in my projects and
design processes in my blog (robertae.blogspot.com)that has helped me a lot and luckily I'vegot
lot of good feedback from people and press.
The workshops, work experience, research and my cultural background have all made me really
aware of what I love to do and I have realised that fashion is something I need in the life
for my self- expression.I love to challenge myself and break borders between the art, fashion
and photography, so that they will influence each other. When people look at my designs and see
something new and simple, but still certain complexity and a story behind that simplicity,I
think I have achieved the goal I have set for myself.

Ma loodan, et sul läheb hästi. Tõesti, väga.
Nii hea on vaadata, kui inimene ainult ei mõtle, vaid teeb ka.
Kõike head!
